Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures. Over time the area around the eyes loses its elasticity, the “bags” make their appearance, the area of the upper eyelid shows a fall, resulting in a look that looks tired even when it is not. Blepharoplasty is the procedure that gives a solution to the problem and gives you a more youthful look.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the procedure in which the excess skin on the upper eyelid is removed as well as excess fat that is responsible for the swelling that has undergone the medial canthós. As far as the lower eyelid is concerned, the periorbital fat is removed and the muscle relaxation is corrected so that the “bags” disappear, the wrinkles are reduced and your eyes become fresher and more restful.

Who are eligible candidates to do blepharoplasty?

Men and women, who are over 35 years old with good health (not experiencing, i.e., essential health problems can proceed. In some cases where there is hereditary predisposition and the fall of the upper eyelid makes the vision problematic or the overconcentration of the periorbital fat (bags) causes continuous swelling, then blepharoplasty can be applied to younger people.

Blepharoplasty: Pre-surgery preparation

The plastic surgeon will make a thorough record of your history in order to determine whether you have any kind of allergy or other problem related to your eyes. It will then examine you for any tissue problems. If you were diagnosed with glaucoma or retinal detachment, you should also be examined by an ophthalmologist before proceeding with blepharoplasty. Also, if you are taking anticoagulants you will be asked to discontinue them for a few days to minimize the risk of complications during surgery.

Blepharoplasty: The procedure of surgery

Blepharoplasty is performed usually under local anesthesia . In some cases, especially when other interventions are performed at the same time, general anesthesia is preferred. The duration of the operation is from one to three hours depending on the degree of problem presented by each patient. The surgeon opens small incisions on the upper eyelid, to the point that they are not easily noticed. In the area of the lower eyelid the incisions are made directly under the eyelashes for the same reason. Through these incisions the excess fat is removed and the muscles that show relaxation are corrected. When the patient does not show relaxation but only accumulation of periorbital fat then the surgeon opens only one incision in the eyelash conjunctiva and through it removes excess fat. In this case the incision heals almost immediately and no signs are visible. Blepharoplasty aims at the optimum aesthetic result.

Blepharoplasty: Postoperative Course

A few hours after blepharoplasty you are able to return home. Only if the anesthesia method chosen was general, you will remain in the clinic. The eyelids, naturally, present swelling after surgery. However you do not feel pain but a minimal discomfort, which is treated with simple analgesics and resolves completely over two days. The ecchymosis (bruises) gradually fade and in about 1 week disappear. The incisions are initially red but not easily distinguished due to their signs. If you are a woman you can apply makeup in the area after one week. The sutures are removed by the surgeon after five days, during this time you should wear sunglasses throughout the day.

Blepharoplasty: What complications can arise?

The complications of blepharoplasty are rare. Those that have been recorded are not particularly serious and are easily treated. It is possible to have:

Appearance of small-sized sebaceous cysts, which your doctor will remove with a very fine needle.

Asymmetry in the healing of scars.

Diplopia, which is immediately corrected.

Lesion in the shape of the eyelids.

Create a hematoma.

Blepharoplasty: Are the results permanent?

The results of blepharoplasty last for many years. If excess skin reappears because of the normal deterioration of the body, then there will be a re-fall and the procedure will need to be resumed. The lower eyelid area is not the same. The results are of a permanent nature. You are all exempt from dark circles and “bags” and you do not need to repeat the procedure.

Do I have to adopt any special behavior after blepharoplasty?

No need to change habits after blepharoplasty. But it would be beneficial for the first few days after surgery not to watch TV or sit behind the computer screen for a long time. At the beginning, also try not to exercise strongly. In order to relieve the swelling of the first days more quickly apply cold compresses to the affected area and the eye drops recommended by the doctor to treat dry eye.

Where exactly are the incisions made during blepharoplasty?

The sections of the incisions are carefully selected so that they cannot be easily visible. As far as the upper eyelid area is concerned, the incision is made in the anti-eyelash fissure. The first space is distinguished only when the eyes are closed. Over time the scar fades and can not be distinguished. The incision under the eyelashes is not noticeable.

Do I have to move into eyelid surgery, upper and lower eyelid or can I individually?

It is understood that you should not proceed with eyelid surgery of upper and lower eyelid if you do not really need it. If the problem is only in one area, the intervention will be done individually. However, this rarely happens, it is common to apply blepharoplasty in both areas of the eyelid.
